Welcome to BIC Winter 2010
Events Before/After Reading Week
February 6th, 2010The last python tutorial led by Eddie Ma will be Tuesday, February 9th in B1-273 (the Gleave Library). This final lecture will cover regular expressions and list comprehension.
The Perl and SQL tutorials put on by BIC are scheduled to run after reading week. More information will be sent out later on.
There will be a BIC/iGEM meet on Wednesday, February 10th in B1-273 (the Gleave Library) at 6pm. There are several great opportunities to get involved with iGEM which will be discussed at the meet, such as work on established software and modeling projects processed by the team. As well, there is a new project, codenamed SOLVER, which will aim to aid faculties in biology and chemistry that need solutions to computational problems but do not have the tools to do so. SOLVER will be open to both iGEM and BIC students for collaboration to research and develop software for those groups. The iGEM modelling team and most of iGEM comes into full effect later this semester, and the SOLVER group will come into full effect early summer.
The iGEM competition is an annual event wherein teams from universities across the world showcase their synthetic biology projects. These teams are composed of mostly undergraduates who toil with BioBricks -- well defined DNA building blocks closed by particular restriction sites used in the competition. To compete, a project must contribute new conforming BioBricks or use previous BioBricks to do new things. Many teams including Waterloo have expanded into the realm of computational modeling. More information can be found at igem.uwaterloo.ca and igem.org
